Rockfellow papers, 1875-1935.

Correspondence, manuscripts, appointment books, business records, maps, and a scrapbook mostly relating to his interest in the history of the Sulphur Springs Valley and the Dragoon Mountains including the Apache Indians, Cochise, Tom Jeffords, and early settlers. His correspondence relates to Arizona politics, Tom Jeffords and Cochise, the Dragoon Mountains, one invitation to the 1938 Arizona Desert Rats meeting, and a 1917 letter from the Arizona Council of Defense. Correspondents include E.R. Wash of Indiana and Robert Forbes. His diaries are actually appointment books except one dated 1884 which contains student lists for his 1896-1897 mathematics classes. Drafts of his book "Log of An Arizona Trail Blazer" are present and a scrapbook of newspaper clippings. Manuscripts about Pete Kitchen, Camp Rucker, the Chiricahua Cattle Company, and Cochise County Ranches are also present. There are financial and business records for J.E. Durkee, owner of the Gird Ranch, and for the Tombstone Consolidated Mines Company, 1901-1904, and the Tombstone Mill and Mining Company, 1883-1893.

Biographical note: Thomas Jeffords, Indian agent at Fort Bowie was remembered as the "blood brother" of Cochise. He was born in New York in 1832 and came to Arizona in 1860. Rancher; Rockfellow arrived in Arizona in 1878. He was a miner in Tombstone, then established the NY Ranch in the Sulphur Spring Valley near Cochise Stronghold in partnership with Walter E. Servoss and Jack Spencer. He also taught mathematics for two years at the University of Arizona, served four years as Cochise County School Superintendent circa 1908, and maintained a civil engineering practice in Tombstone.
